Where people meet
Casual dating after forty
Not everyone looking is looking for a relationship. That is a legitimate position and it deserves a straight answer rather than a lecture.
Plenty of people at this stage want company, intimacy and something uncomplicated — after a long marriage, during a period when a relationship would not fit, or simply because that is what they want. There is nothing to justify.
What has changed is where it happens.
The classifieds are gone
For years the default route was the personals sections of classified sites. Those were shut down in 2018 following changes to US law around online platforms and liability, and they have not come back. Anything still advertising itself as a replacement is worth approaching with real caution — that space attracts scams and worse.
What replaced it is ordinary dating platforms, where a great many people are explicit about looking for something casual rather than serious.
Being honest about it works better
The single most common complaint from people on both sides of this is mismatched expectations — someone wanting a relationship discovering the other person did not, or the reverse.
Saying plainly what you are looking for filters your matches down and improves every conversation that survives the filter. It feels blunt to write and it saves everyone time.
Safety, which matters more here
Meeting a stranger for something casual carries the same risks as any other first meeting, with less social context around it. The basics are not optional:
- Meet somewhere public first, chosen by you, even if the plan is to go elsewhere afterwards.
- Your own transport, both ways.
- Someone who knows where you are and when you expect to be back.
- A video call before meeting. Standard practice now and nobody reasonable objects.
- Never send money to anyone you have not met. No exceptions, whatever the reason.

Health
Rates of sexually transmitted infections among older adults have risen substantially over the past decade, and the usual explanation is straightforward: this age group was not the target of any safer-sex campaign and, after a long monogamous period, often has not thought about it in twenty years.
Testing is quick, generally free or cheap, and a standard screen covers the common infections. Ask specifically about anything relevant to you rather than assuming a general panel covers everything. This is general information rather than clinical advice — a sexual health service can tell you what is appropriate.
Being clear about what you want is not rudeness. The people who report the worst experiences are almost always the ones who let the other person assume, on either side.
Common questions
Where do people arrange casual dating now?
Mainstream dating platforms, where many people state plainly that they are looking for something casual. The classified personals sections closed in 2018 and have not returned.
Is it normal to want something casual at my age?
Yes, and it is common after a long marriage or during a period when a relationship would not fit. It requires no justification, only honesty with the people you meet.
What should I be careful about?
The ordinary first-meeting precautions, plus health. Infection rates among older adults have risen notably, largely because this age group was never the focus of safer-sex messaging.
