Where people meet
Casual, local, and honest about it
Plenty of people want something uncomplicated and that is a legitimate position. What is not legitimate is most of what this search returns.
This page assumes you know what you want and does not lecture. What it does do is tell you what the search results actually are, because a large share of them are not what they appear.
What the results actually contain
- Mainstream dating platforms. Where this genuinely happens now, with people who are stating plainly what they are looking for.
- Classified sites. Faster and considerably more fraudulent. Covered in our guide to Doublelist and the alternatives.
- Pages that exist to collect your details. No real users, a signup form, and your email sold onward.
- Outright scam operations. Automated replies, a verification site that wants card details, no people at any point.
The ratio matters. In this particular corner, the proportion of listings that are not real people is worse than anywhere else in online dating.
The verification scam
Worth its own section because it is so common and so effective.
You post or reply. Someone answers quickly and warmly. Within a few messages they ask you to verify yourself — for their safety, they say — on a third-party site. That site wants card details, sometimes framed as a token charge or an age check.
There is no legitimate version of this. No real person needs you to verify on an external site. The card details are the entire point, and the charges that follow are rarely the amount advertised.
What actually works
- Say plainly what you are looking for. Mismatched expectations are the most common complaint on both sides, and directness filters better than anything else.
- Insist on a video call. Ten minutes. It removes essentially every automated account and most of the fraud.
- Meet somewhere public first, even if the plan is to go elsewhere afterwards.
- Your own transport, both ways.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- Never send money. No exceptions, no reasons.
Health
Rates of sexually transmitted infections among older adults have risen substantially over the past decade. The usual explanation is straightforward: this age group was never the target of a safer-sex campaign, and after a long monogamous period many people have not thought about it in twenty years.
Testing is quick and generally free or cheap. A standard screen covers the common infections; ask specifically about anything relevant to you rather than assuming a general panel covers everything. This is general information rather than clinical advice.
The single filter that removes most of the problem: a short video call before meeting. Nobody genuine objects, and everything automated fails it. More in our safety guide.
Common questions
How do people arrange casual dating now?
Mainly on mainstream dating platforms, where a great many people state plainly that they are looking for something casual. The classified sites are faster and carry considerably more fraud.
Why do people ask me to verify on another site?
Because it is a scam. There is no legitimate reason for anyone to need you to verify your identity on a third-party page that wants card details, and this is the most common fraud in this space.
What safety precautions actually matter?
A video call before meeting, somewhere public first, your own transport, someone knowing where you are, and never sending money. The video call alone removes most of the problem.
