Where people meet

Meeting older women

The short answer is that women in this age group are in the same places as everyone else — which is less helpful than it sounds, so here is the longer version.

Two things are worth establishing before the practical part, because getting either wrong makes the rest pointless.

Two things to get right first

The word older is doing a lot of work. If you are fifty-five, a woman of fifty is not older. Most men searching this mean somewhere between forty and sixty, and most of them are in that range themselves. Being clear with yourself about who you actually want to meet saves a great deal of wasted effort.

The most common complaint from women in this age group is being approached as a category rather than a person. Anything that treats a woman's age as the interesting thing about her lands badly, and this is worth internalising before you go anywhere.

Where they actually are

SettingWhy it works
VolunteeringConsistently skews older and female. Charity shops, community groups, wildlife trusts, hospital leagues of friends.
Classes and coursesCookery, languages, art, dance. Adult education attendance skews strongly female across the board.
Choirs and amateur musicVery well attended by this age group, and they meet weekly.
Walking and rambling groupsPopular, sociable and low-pressure. Side by side is easier than face to face.
Book groupsOverwhelmingly female. Worth being genuinely interested in reading.
OnlineWhere most people in this age group now meet. Not glamorous but true.

The pattern, again: repeated contact with the same people over weeks. A one-off event almost never produces anything.

What does not work

  • Approaching strangers in shops, gyms or cafés. Worse in this age group, not better.
  • Joining something you have no interest in. It is visible immediately.
  • Leading with age in any form, including as a compliment.
  • Treating a woman's divorce or bereavement as an opening topic.

The thing that works better than any location

Being someone people enjoy talking to. That sounds like a platitude and it is the actual answer — in any of the settings above, the men who meet someone are the ones who turned up regularly, were easy company, and let it develop over weeks rather than deciding on the first evening.

If you are looking specifically for a relationship rather than to expand your social life, say so, kindly and early. Women in this age group report a great deal of ambiguity from men and almost universally prefer directness to it.

Common questions

Where can I meet women over 50?

Volunteering, adult education classes, choirs, walking groups and book clubs all skew older and female. Most people in this age group now meet online, though, and the two work best together.

How do I approach an older woman?

The same way you would approach anyone — as a person rather than a category. The most common complaint from women in this age group is being approached because of their age.

Do older women want to date younger men?

Some do and some do not, exactly as with any other group. Assuming it as a general preference is the mistake.
