Online dating

Online dating when you have never done it

Most of the frustration people describe comes from expecting it to work like something it is not. Here is a realistic picture before you start.

This is where most people in this age group now meet, whatever anyone thinks of it. It is also the thing people most often try for three weeks, find dispiriting, and abandon — usually for reasons that are fixable.

What it is actually for

It is not a shop and it is not a matching service. What it does is manufacture introductions — the thing your social life used to supply for free and stopped.

That framing helps, because it sets the right expectation. You are not selecting someone. You are generating a supply of first conversations, most of which will go nowhere, in order to get to the few that do.

Realistic numbers

  1. Most messages get no reply. This is true for everyone and says nothing about you.
  2. Most conversations fade after a few exchanges.
  3. Most first meetings do not lead to a second.
  4. Most people who find someone describe months, not weeks.

Written down, that looks discouraging. In practice it means the process is a numbers exercise with a good outcome at the end, and the people who do badly are the ones who took the early silence personally.

The things that actually make a difference

  • Recent photographs, several, with your face visible. This is the single biggest factor and the one most often got wrong. Photos from ten years ago are counterproductive — you will meet eventually.
  • A profile that says something specific. “I like travel and good food” describes everyone. One real detail beats five generic ones.
  • Messages that reference their profile. Anything that could have been sent to anyone will be treated as though it was.
  • Meeting sooner. Chemistry does not survive being over-anticipated across three weeks of messaging.
  • A tight radius. Distance kills more of these than incompatibility does.

The frustrations, and which are fixable

Everyone is much older than their photosCommon. A video call before meeting solves it entirely.
It feels like a catalogueIt is, somewhat. Treating it as a way to generate conversations rather than to browse people helps.

I hate the whole thingLegitimate. Plenty of people use it as one route among several rather than the only one.

A reasonable way to start

Put up four or five recent photographs and a hundred words that say something true. Set the radius tight. Message five people who look interesting, referring to something they wrote. Suggest a coffee once a conversation has gone a few exchanges.

Then give it three months before deciding whether it works. Three weeks is not a sample.

You can look without doing anything. A great many people browse for weeks before they message anyone, and that is a perfectly sensible way to find out whether you want to be doing this at all.

Common questions

Does online dating work over 50?

It is where most people in this age group now meet. The main difficulty is that people try it for three weeks, find the silence dispiriting, and stop before it has had a chance.

Why is nobody replying to me?

Usually photographs or a thin profile. Recent pictures with your face visible and a hundred words that say something specific make more difference than anything else.

How many photos should I have?

Four or five, recent, with your face clearly visible in at least two. Using photographs from ten years ago is counterproductive, since you will meet eventually.
