Eight years on, people are still looking for it. Here is what happened, what exists now, and the part nobody mentions — the space it left behind is full of scams.
If you used the personals section and went looking for it one day to find it gone, you are not alone. It remains one of the most searched questions in online dating, which tells you something about how well it worked and how poorly it has been replaced.
What actually happened
Craigslist closed its personals section in March 2018, the same week the US Congress passed FOSTA — legislation that made online platforms liable for content facilitating prostitution. Craigslist took the whole section down rather than attempt to moderate it, and said so plainly at the time.
Backpage, which carried similar listings, was seized by federal authorities weeks later. Between them, the classified-personals model in the US effectively ended within a month.

The part that matters most
The gap left by Craigslist attracted fraud at a scale the original never had. Anything positioning itself as the new personals is worth treating with suspicion until proven otherwise.
- Any request for a verification site. You are asked to confirm your age or identity on a third-party page that wants card details. This is the single most common scam in this space and there is no legitimate version of it.
- A reply within seconds. Automated. Real people do not answer a classified ad instantly.
- Immediate push to another app. Away from any moderation or record.
- Any mention of money. Deposits, taxi fares, verification fees. All of it, always, is a scam.
- Photographs that reverse-search elsewhere. Ten seconds to check.

If you want what the personals actually offered
Strip away the format and what people valued was: free, local, no profile to build, and everyone there for the same reason. Two of those are still available.
Local and same-reason are what dating platforms provide, slower but with moderation and some accountability. Free is available on most of them for browsing and often for messaging.
