Where people meet
Doublelist and the alternatives
The closest thing to the old classifieds, with all the same appeal and considerably more fraud.
Doublelist launched in 2018, weeks after Craigslist closed its personals, and deliberately copied the format: free listings, by city, by category, no profile required.
How it works
You browse or post by city and category. Replies go to an in-site inbox. There is no profile to build, no matching algorithm, and no subscription for basic use — which is exactly why people prefer it and exactly why it attracts what it attracts.
It is moderated, unlike the original, and posts are removed. That moderation is thinner than on mainstream platforms and a large share of what you encounter will still be automated.
The alternatives that actually exist
| Option | Honest assessment |
|---|---|
| Mainstream dating apps | Slower, but real people, real moderation and some accountability. Where most of this audience actually ended up. |
| Reddit city personals communities | Genuinely active in larger cities. Rules and enforcement vary by community; read them before posting. |
| Other classified sites | Several exist. Quality varies from acceptable to outright fraudulent, and the ones advertising hardest are usually the worst. |
| Local Facebook groups | They appear and get closed. Not something to rely on. |
The pattern is consistent: the freer and more anonymous the platform, the higher the proportion of scams. That is not a coincidence, it is the trade-off.
Using classifieds without being scammed
- Never use a third-party verification site. If someone asks you to confirm your age or identity on an external page that wants card details, that is the scam. There is no legitimate version.
- Be suspicious of instant replies. A response within seconds of posting is automated.
- Refuse to move platforms immediately. The push to a messaging app is about escaping moderation.
- Insist on a video call. Standard, and the single most effective filter available.
- Never send money. No deposits, no fares, no fees. Ever.
- Meet in public first, your own transport, someone knows where you are.
What you give up and what you get
Classifieds are faster and require nothing of you. Dating platforms are slower, require a profile, and give you moderation, a history, and people who are identifiable.
For most people over forty the second trade is the better one, particularly if what you actually want is to meet someone rather than to arrange something quickly. Our guide to casual dating covers the middle ground.
If a listing seems too good, it is a listing rather than a person. The ratio of automated posts to real ones in this corner of the internet is worse than anywhere else in online dating, and knowing that before you start saves a great deal of time.
