First dates
What to wear
Something you already know you look good in. That is most of the answer and the rest is detail.
A first date is not the occasion to test an outfit you are unsure about. If you spend the evening adjusting something, that is where your attention goes and it shows.
The principle
Dress one notch above the venue and no more. Coffee means smart casual. A drink means the same with better shoes. If you have to ask whether it is too much, it is.
Overdressing signals effort, which sounds good and reads as trying. Underdressing signals indifference. One notch above is the range where neither happens.
For men
- Fit matters more than anything else. A well-fitting cheap shirt beats an expensive one that does not.
- Clean shoes. The single most noticed detail and the one most often neglected.
- Dark jeans or chinos, a shirt or a good jumper. This covers ninety per cent of first dates.
- Skip the suit unless you came from work and say so.
- Less fragrance than you think. Noticeable at arm's length, not across the room.
For women
- Shoes you can walk in. Plans change and nothing ruins an evening faster.
- Something you have worn before. You know how it sits and you are not managing it.
- Layers. Venues are unpredictable and being cold is distracting.
- Comfortable beats striking. Ease is what reads as confidence.
What everyone gets wrong
Dressing for the person rather than the evening. You do not know them yet, you are guessing at what they like, and guessing wrong is worse than being yourself.
The version of you that turns up should be the version that exists on an ordinary good day, because that is the one they will meet again.
One practical thing: check the weather and check the venue. Turning up in the wrong shoes for a walk, or overdressed for a pub, is the kind of small friction that occupies your attention all evening.
Common questions
What should I wear on a first date?
Something you already know suits you, one notch above the venue. A first date is not the occasion to test an outfit you are unsure about.
What should men wear?
Dark jeans or chinos with a shirt or good jumper covers most first dates. Fit matters more than price, and clean shoes are the most-noticed detail.
Can I overdress?
Yes. Overdressing reads as trying rather than as effort. One notch above the venue is the range where neither overdressing nor indifference registers.
