First dates

First date ideas

The best first date is short, cheap and lets you talk. Almost everything else is a variation on getting those three right.

Most lists on this subject are written for people in their twenties with time and no responsibilities. Here is the version for adults, which is shorter because the answer is simpler.

The three rules

  1. Keep it short. An hour or two. A short date that goes well can extend; a long one that goes badly cannot be shortened.
  2. Make talking possible. Anywhere too loud, too dark or too absorbing defeats the purpose.
  3. Keep it cheap. Expensive creates obligation on one side and pressure on the other.

Coffee satisfies all three, which is why it has become the default and why that is a sensible development rather than a sad one.

What works

IdeaWhy
CoffeeCheap, short, easy to extend. The reliable default for a reason.
A drink somewhere quietSame virtues, slightly more relaxed. Check it is actually quiet.
A walkSide by side is easier than face to face. Excellent for nerves, and free.
A market or a gardenSomething to look at removes the pressure to fill silences.
Bowling or minigolfGenuinely good — an activity, a shared joke, and nobody has to be good at it.
An exhibitionWorks if you both like them. Built-in conversation, natural end point.

What does not

  • Dinner. Two or three hours committed regardless of how it goes, plus the bill question. Save it for the third.
  • The cinema. Two hours of not talking. Baffling as a first date and still recommended constantly.
  • Anything loud. Concerts, busy bars. You will spend the evening shouting.
  • Anything expensive. Creates obligation before you know whether you like each other.
  • Somewhere far. A long drive commits you both to the whole evening.
  • Your house. Not first. This should not need saying and evidently does.

Practical points people forget

Choose somewhere you know. Familiarity removes one variable and lets you focus on the person rather than the parking.

Meet there, do not be collected. Own transport both ways, first time, always. It is a safety basic and nobody reasonable takes offence.

Have an end time in mind. Knowing there is an exit makes the whole thing easier, and you can always ignore it.

How long it should last

An hour to ninety minutes for a first meeting. Long enough to know whether you want more, short enough that a bad one is survivable.

If it is going well it will run over by itself and that is the pleasant version. Planning three hours in advance is how people end up trapped.

Whatever you pick, the venue matters far less than whether you are easy company. Nobody remembers the coffee shop. More on the evening itself in your first date in years.

Common questions

What is the best first date?

Coffee or a drink somewhere quiet, for an hour or two. Short, cheap and possible to talk in — those three things matter far more than the venue.

Is dinner a good first date?

Not really. It commits you both to two or three hours regardless of how it goes, and adds the bill question. Better saved for a later date.

How long should a first date last?

An hour to ninety minutes. Long enough to know whether you want to see them again, short enough that a bad one is survivable.
