First dates
Should you kiss on a first date?
There is no rule, and anyone offering you one is describing their own preference. There are, however, reliable ways to tell.
This is asked constantly and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on the two people, which is unsatisfying until you realise it means you get to decide.
How to tell if it is wanted
The signals are the same ones that ran through the whole evening, concentrated at the end.
- They are not leaving. The date has an obvious end and they are lingering past it.
- They have closed the distance. Standing closer than the conversation requires.
- They are facing you. Body square on, not angled toward the exit.
- Contact has already happened. A touch on the arm, a hand at the elbow.
- They are still talking when the conversation could comfortably have ended.
Two or three together is a reasonable read. One on its own is not.
How to tell if it is not
A quick goodbye, a step back, keys already in hand, a hug that is over before it starts, or looking at their phone. All of these are polite and all of them mean no.
Reading them correctly the first time matters more than anything else on this page.
If you are not sure
Ask. “Can I kiss you?” is not the mood-killer people imagine — the overwhelming majority of women asked about this say they find it attractive rather than awkward, and it removes the possibility of misreading entirely.
The alternative, leaning in and finding out, puts the burden of declining on the other person at the least comfortable possible moment.
If you do not want to
Then do not. A warm hug and “I've had a really good time — can we do this again?” ends the evening perfectly and signals interest just as clearly.
Not kissing on a first date means nothing about how the date went, and reading it as rejection is a mistake people make in both directions.
The most common regret people report is not that they did or did not kiss someone. It is that they did something they were unsure about because they thought it was expected.
Common questions
Should you kiss on the first date?
There is no rule. What matters is whether both people want to, and the signals are readable — lingering, closed distance, facing you, still talking when the evening could have ended.
Is it awkward to ask?
Less than people imagine. Most women asked about it describe being asked as attractive rather than awkward, and it removes the possibility of misreading.
What if I do not want to?
A warm hug and asking to see them again signals interest just as clearly. Not kissing says nothing about how the date went.
