Where people meet
Singles events near you
More of them exist than you think, and the good ones look nothing like the format's reputation.
Most people picture a hotel function room and a name badge. Some are exactly that. The ones worth attending are built around doing something, and they are considerably easier to walk into.
The formats, honestly
| Format | What it is like |
|---|---|
| Singles walks | Consistently the best reviewed. Side by side removes the pressure, and there is scenery to talk about. |
| Speed dating | Efficient and less humiliating than expected. Age-specific nights are noticeably better. |
| Interest-based groups | Cookery, book clubs, dance. Strongest format, because there is something to do other than assess each other. |
| Singles dinners | Depends on the organiser. Good ones rotate the seating; bad ones seat you once. |
| Singles nights at bars | The weakest. Reverts to an ordinary bar within an hour. |
| Volunteering days | Not marketed as singles events, which is precisely why they work. |
Where to find them
- Meetup and Eventbrite, searched on your nearest large town rather than your village.
- Local Facebook groups — still where most community events are listed.
- Library and community centre noticeboards. Genuinely useful and almost nobody looks.
- The local paper's what's-on section.
- Dating platforms, most of which now list local events alongside profiles.
Going alone
Which is what stops most people, and is worth naming rather than glossing over.
Turning up somewhere by yourself is uncomfortable at any age. Almost everyone who does it reports the same thing: the discomfort lasts about twenty minutes, and everyone else in the room arrived alone too and feels the same way.
The practical trick is arriving early. Walking into a half-full room is far easier than a full one, and you end up talking to whoever else came early — who are, by definition, the other people who found this hard.
What to expect from one evening
Realistically: a few conversations, one or two you enjoy, possibly a number exchanged, usually nothing immediate. That is a normal successful evening.
The people who do well go four times to the same thing rather than once to four different things. Familiarity does most of the work that a good night is supposed to.
If a format sounds unbearable, do not go. There are enough of them that you can pick one built around something you would enjoy anyway — and enjoying yourself is what makes you good company.
Common questions
What are singles events actually like?
The good ones are built around an activity — walks, cookery, book groups — and feel like an ordinary social event. Singles nights at bars are the weakest format and revert to a normal bar within an hour.

Is it awkward going alone?
For about twenty minutes. Everyone else arrived alone too. Arriving early helps more than anything — a half-full room is far easier to walk into.
