Talking to people
Flirting with a woman
The gap between what men think works and what women say works is wide, consistent, and easy to close.
Two things worth establishing. Women in this age group are approached less often than they were, and most say they would welcome it done well. And the complaints they make are remarkably consistent, which means they are fixable.
What women say works
- Being spoken to like a person. Opening with something ordinary and situational beats anything constructed.
- Listening visibly. Following up on something she said ten minutes ago registers more than any compliment.
- Warmth without intensity. Friendly and relaxed. The difference between interested and needing something is felt immediately.
- Clear but light intent. Ambiguity is the most common complaint about men in this age group. Asking her for a coffee is clearer and kinder than six weeks of hinting.
- Accepting a no first time. This is attractive in itself, which men rarely believe.
What reliably does not
- Comments about her body, at any point in the first conversations.
- Approaching when she cannot leave — a train, a queue, a gym floor. The setting removes her choice, and that is what makes it uncomfortable rather than the approach itself.
- Persistence after a polite signal. Looking away, short answers, turning her body. All of these are a no.
- Negging. Discussed endlessly online, disliked universally in practice.
- Leading with her age, including as a compliment. “You look great for your age” is not the compliment it is intended to be.
Reading the response
The reliable signals that it is welcome: she turns toward you, keeps the conversation going past its natural end, asks you something back, and stays when she could easily leave.
The reliable signals that it is not: short answers, looking past you, angling away, checking her phone. None of these is rudeness. They are the polite way of saying no, and reading them correctly is most of what separates a good approach from an uncomfortable one.
The setting matters more than the line
Anywhere she can walk away comfortably is fine. Anywhere she cannot is not, however good your opening. That single distinction accounts for most of the difference between an approach that is welcome and one that is complained about afterwards.
This is also why the settings that work for meeting people are the ones where you see each other repeatedly — covered in where to meet women. Familiarity does most of the work that a good line supposedly does.
If you are out of practice
Start by being warm to everyone, with no agenda. It rebuilds the muscle without any stakes, and it makes the difference between charm you have to switch on and warmth that is simply how you are.
The most useful correction, from women who were asked: stop trying to be impressive and be interested instead. It is easier, it works better, and it is available to anyone.
Common questions
How do I flirt with a woman without being creepy?
Approach where she can comfortably leave, be warm rather than intense, listen visibly, and accept a polite signal the first time. The setting matters more than anything you say.
What do women find attractive in conversation?
Being listened to. Following up on something she said earlier registers far more than a compliment, and it is available to anyone.
Should I compliment her appearance?
Sparingly and not first. Comments about her body in early conversation are the most common complaint. Something she chose — a jacket, a book — lands better than something she did not.
